Theywalkedon,withoutknowinginwhatdirection.Therewastoomuchtobethought,andfelt,andsaid,forattentiontoanyotherobjects.Shesoonlearntthattheywereindebtedfortheirpresentgoodunderstandingtotheeffortsofhisaunt,whodidcallonhiminherreturnthroughLondon,andthererelateherjourneytoLongbourn,itsmotive,andthesubstanceofherconversationwithElizabeth;dwellingemphaticallyoneveryexpressionofthelatterwhich,inherladyshipsapprehension,peculiarlydenotedherperversenessandassurance;inthebeliefthatsucharelationmustassistherendeavourstoobtainthatpromisefromhernephewwhichshehadrefusedtogive.But,unluckilyforherladyship,itseffecthadbeenexactlycontrariwise.
“Ittaughtmetohope,”
saidhe,“asIhadscarcelyeverallowedmyselftohopebefore.Iknewenoughofyourdispositiontobecertainthat,hadyoubeenabsolutely,irrevocablydecidedagainstme,youwouldhaveacknowledgedittoLadyCatherine,franklyandopenly.”
Elizabethcolouredandlaughedasshereplied,“Yes,youknowenoughofmyfranknesstobelievemecapableofthat.Afterabusingyousoabominablytoyourface,Icouldhavenoscrupleinabusingyoutoallyourrelations.”
“Whatdidyousayofme,thatIdidnotdeserve?For,thoughyouraccusationswereill-founded,formedonmistakenpremises,mybehaviourtoyouatthetimehadmeritedtheseverestreproof.Itwasunpardonable.Icannotthinkofitwithoutabhorrence.”
“Wewillnotquarrelforthegreatershareofblameannexedtothatevening,”
